Help on my first fursuit head!

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 6:44 PM
Hey all! Been watching this community for so long now, and I have finally been working on my first suit - Razor, of SWAT Kats. Now, I need a little help.

I started with a balaclava and used mesh to make the moving jaw. Doesn't move that well, but I'm trying to get this done by Friday for Comic-Con, so I don't care too much about the moving functionality.

Pics of the head + character design )

I need some help on the eyes. What I was thinking of doing was using the needlepoint cloth for the Razor's eyes, since they are pure white, and sticking it under the foam I have for the bridges of his eyes. However, I just found out that my ability to see isn't... too good with that fabric, so now I need to know what else I can do. I already have the black fabric for the "bandana" he wears which I think will look nice once it's sewn or glued to the face. What other fabrics should I be looking for for the eyes? I know a few fabric stores so if I can get the name of the fabric, I can go from there.

I'm happy that I was able to figure out a way to get his signature cheek ruffs that would look good from both the front and the side. Any other comments appreciated! (Other than the "lopsided" cheeks - I'm working on those!)

Snout advice (again)

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 8:27 PM
I just can't stop getting advice on this thing >< All right, this is nowhere near done. I've done barely any shaping, no sloping, etc. I just want to know if this is too long or not? Or it's too tall from top to bottom?

Yep!

I'm most certainly getting a tummy now. But I'm calling it pillows for my six pack *nods*.

Internet And Yiffs

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 12:52 AM
I co-manage an Internet company that has no Internet connection. Tomorrow will be day 16 of a protracted affair regarding the installation of a broadband and phone line into our new office (which we moved into on Monday). When I say day 16 - this is the 16th day since the first day that they said they would come.

Since then the job has been cancelled four times without us even being informed. Incompetence doesn't come anywhere near it.

In other news, the fish and chip shop right next door to where I live has closed down. The premises is going to form an extension of the pizza shop next door to it (sadly the poorer quality pizza shop of the two near me).

This means that the nearest chippie is ten minutes walk up the road - a far less convenient proposition. Granted the proprietor of the chip shop next door was a pushy bastard and the fish was flavourless but at least it was convenient, particularly at closing time.

I have also found out that in addition to the new bed shop that opened a few weeks ago, a new computer shop has opened too. This makes my neck of the wood some sort of furry heaven: Internets, yiff and yiffing potential...

Good Balaclava sites?

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 7:48 PM
I'm on to making my second (to be fully finished) suit. But, I'm running into one problem.

I can't find the sort of balaclava that keeps sweat away. I'm looking for one that isn't from ebay.

Any site recomendations would be great.

Thanks!

From the post today, I recieved the commission from kaili, see a few posts back to see it, and I got some stuff with it. A ConBadge each for me and my mate, and a sketch a friend did, all for nothing! So kind! ^^

I could show you the new conbadge, but then you wouldn't understand the little red bit at the side, so this should be clear enough ^^

Photobucket

Damn I look smexy.

And the sketch:

I'm gonna digital ink it and get my friend to colour it. It's too cute to leave sketched ^^ but it is awesome...

Ive got the original from panthras coming my way soon I think, and another bit of artwork somewhere. Yay.

In other news, Fringe is ever nearing. As is uni.

A uni problem has came up- SAAS have under-funded me. They estimated I'd get a lot more funding, but it seems theyre settling for just under £1000 a year, which really isn't enough. That won't even pay for my accomodation for three months. If they don't give me more loans... I'm screwed.

x.x SHouting at them tommorrow. Bastards.

I'm now going to drink fifteen glasses of water, because it's so fricking hot here x.x!!

It's rarer and rarer that I'll find music that immediately leaps out and grabs me, forcing me to like it from the start. Most things involve a certain amount of growing on me.

This means choosing music to listen to is harder, because it's difficult to predict what will improve on repeated listens and what won't. Sometimes I wonder if I'd like a lot more music than I already do, if I was willing to actually put the time in to get to know it. 5 seems to be the magic number. 5 listens of, say, an album and I have some idea of where I stand. By this point songs will start to get stuck in my head unbidden, and I will understand the song structure and be able to listen to it as a whole thing rather than just as a series of moments. That helps.

I don't know where I'm going with this.

You should probably just read the next person on your friends page.

This video made me cry! It's a true story (I believe, anyway)about a Baby lion that grew up and got released into the wild in Africa and then reunited a year later with it's human providers that saved him. Watch it's reaction.

i just remembered my other question. with my pauldrons (shoulder pads) they are made to the curve of the foamed shoulders for my suit, and i want to have them on so they dont slip off or anything, but i dont want them permanetly attached to the torso of my suit. i was thinking a strap of leather or something holding them together like this:

any ideas? my dad said this was a good idea but it doesnt stop them from possibly slipping off and then just hanging there....

Beak question on gryphon suit

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 12:08 AM

Got a question for you all!

I’m working on a gryphon suit, and have been busy sculpting the beak.  I did my test version out of clay, and got it to a reasonably good shape.  Here are a couple of shots:

Pics )

I was planning to make a mold with this, and cast a final beak out of fiberglass, believing it would be lighter.  When I talked with my friend who did the casting, however, he told me it would be about the same weight, and this is far too heavy for the balaclava I’m using (seen here with its measly three strips of foam):

I’ve been considering what to make the final beak out of , since it needs to be lighter so as not to pull the front of the mask down, or just to rip away from the balaclava altogether.  My biggest concern is the lower part of the beak, that it contacts the mask solidly and would stay in position.  This clay one would just hang open all the time, and with an unnaturally sharp angle at that, because of its weight.  I’ve been considering both the green upholstery foam as well as this type of white Styrofoam to make the new beak from (yes, it’s shaped like an owl.  It will sacrifice its life for a fellow avian):

The stipulations are as follows:  the beak must be light but strong, and it must also be resistant to damage by water.  I figured that if I used the upholstery foam, I’d have to put paper mache over it or something to make it hard and smooth so that I could paint and seal it...  Although I guess I will over the styrofoam as well, because paint wouldn't stick well to that.  Or should I use the upholstery foam instead, and use something soft and velvety like Jax used for Lasrach

I've seen a couple previous beak-related posts, but I had a really hard time visualizing how to adapt them to my situation, and that's why I posted this.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the construction and attachment of the beak to a balaclava head?  Anything would be greatly appreciated!

PC v's Mac

Finally, the answer is actually resolved. You yourself can determine the outcome of this argument and get the definitive answer to which format is the best.

So...Mac or PC?
